UNSAFE AS HOUSES

From Piccadilly he turned

up a side street.

He was not a man to

waste a walk, even to

an appointment.  Women

were coming out of offices

on the ground floors of tall

blank buildings.  He paused

before one number.

Battlefield (1934)

  1. I try to imagine the gritty English street, the smell of diesel in the chill, damp air, the sounds of the buses grinding past, the passers-by attempting to intervene. I fail.

    1. I know. Words absolutely fail here. That doesn't stop Boris Johnson, PM Cameron, President Obama, etc., from trying, although I wish it would.
