Nobody answered the bell. I was about to ring again, when I saw a pair of eyes on the other side of the peephole. They met close and level with mine in a fixed alarming stare. It was a fantastic moment, as if two dreams had collided.

In 1976 I saw David Bowie at the late International Ampitheater in Chicago, the 'Thin White Duke' tour. Before he played he screened UN CHEN ANDALOU . It gave the crowd quite a start, judging from the exclamations. I had seen it previously. I imagined the reaction when it was originally screened.
ReplyDeleteI love the film and thinking about it again (which you've made me do) reminds me about the unfakeable nature of the really great and of shock value itself. A friend recommended The Slide Area by Gavin Lambert to me. I am happy to recommend it to you. It's really, really great and quite unexpected. And although it might sound obvious to say, if you've spent much time in L.A., it's especially wonderful. Curtis

ReplyDeleteWe are well, but are enduring an unusually difficult winter in terms of weather. Last week we lost power, heat, light, for most of the week and had to "abandon ship" for a while and move into a hotel when it became too cold. We have a dog who's not in the best shape and were very worried about our older cats. Fortunately, we all (except for our two fish, whom we loved) survived. The power was eventually restored, but we feel quite battered. We'll be buying an expensive but necessary generator shortly. This week I need to get my mind back on track and my chores finished. You?
